Marshall Regional Medical Center Receives State, National Recognition
MARSHALL, TX (June 16, 2007) – Marshall Regional Medical Center has announced it has recently received separate prestigious state and national awards in healthcare. Both are awards for clinical excellence.
VHA Inc., a national health care alliance for non-profit hospitals, has given Marshall Regional Medical Center a 2007 VHA Leadership Award for Clinical Excellence, honoring the hospital for meeting or exceeding national performance standards for clinical care in specific areas. VHA serves more than 2,400 health care organizations nationwide. Only 277 member hospitals across the country achieved the standards to receive the prestigious Clinical Excellence Award. Marshall Regional Medical Center was one among those recognized who achieved the standard in which hospital size was not a factor.
The hospital was recently honored at VHA’s Leadership Conference in Denver. VHA reviewed the performance of its members in 2006, and Clinical Excellence awards were presented for achievements in at least one of seven clinical categories.
A second award will be presented to Marshall Regional Medical Center June 28 in Austin, Texas from the Texas Medical Foundation (TMF) Health Quality Institute. Out of more than 390 eligible Texas hospitals, only 63 won the highest possible award, The Award of Excellence. MRMC was among that group.
The TMF award honors Texas hospitals that are performing quality initiatives aimed at improving outcomes in patient care by recognizing those hospitals that have improved their initial baseline performance on specific national quality measures. The award acknowledges hospitals for improving care related to heart attack, heart failure, and pneumonia.
“We are obviously extremely pleased to receive the recognition through these awards,” said Russ Collier, Chief Executive Officer of MRMC. “But we’re happier for the community. Receiving these awards is just confirmation from outside professional organizations that, over the past few years, our intentional effort is paying off as we further improve the quality of care for our patients.”
Both awards were based on publicly available patient outcome data from sources such as Medicare. The data from the TMF award, for example, was taken from medical records from the spring of 2005 and compared to the same time period in 2006.
“We are determined to pursue the best care possible because the people in the greater Marshall area are our families, friends, and neighbors. Admittedly selfish, but unashamed, we think they deserve the best as does anyone who comes to our hospital,” said Collier. “We're proud of these awards, and we think the community will be, too. We have extremely dedicated doctors, nurses, clinical and professional staff that want our friends and neighbors to be as healthy as possible. We won't compromise on that,” he continued.
"At the heart of the covenant between patients and hospitals lies the belief that clinical excellence is paramount," said Trent Haywood, M.D., J.D., chief medical officer at VHA. "Marshall Regional Medical Center is a shining example of what can be achieved when a hospital's actions are guided by the pursuit of clinical excellence."
